The University of Bremen
Together with the adjacent Technology Park, hosting around 320 companies, the university of Bremen is one of the leading high-tech locations in Germany. The ground-breaking educational concepts implemented in the early days after the foundation in 1971, which came to be known as the "Bremer Modell", include interdisciplinary study and research, research-based teaching projects, orientation to practice, responsibility towards society and gender equality. Gender mainstreaming is not only implemented in research, but also constitutes a central criterion of all processes related to adminstration and decision-making. Due to these fundamental principles, based on a willingness to experiment and flexibility, the university of Bremen now finds itself at the pinnacle of higher education. In 2006, it was ranked by the "Excellence Initiative" among the top ten German universities.
